Even though Borussia Dortmund were unable to win the Bundesliga this season, with Bayern Munich once more standing on top, Die Borussen have indeed an interesting transfer policy and are able to build a strong team every season. It is this ability which has allowed them to be Bayern’s main rivals in Germany. In the last couple of years, they frequently signed players for little money who then developed incredibly at BVB, eventually being sold on for huge transfer fees.
In this quick data analysis, we will look at players within the last 10 seasons who got sold for at least €10 million by Borussia Dortmund, with that fee also being at least double of what BVB paid for them in the first place.
These numbers have been visualized in the chart below. These 10 players are the ones who left the club within the last decade for at least a fee of €10 million and additionally joined BVB for less than half the fee which their new club paid.
It is no surprise that Ousmane Dembélé is the one who stands out due to his big move to Barcelona, with the Catalonians paying €125 million for the French winger. However, another incredible transfer for BVB was the departure of the American Christian Pulisic as Chelsea signed him for €64 million. They had brought him to Germany for free at the age of 16.
While two of the players moved to Spanish clubs, four joined a team in the Premier League, three got sold to another Bundesliga side and Julian Weigl joined Benfica. Considering this, we can see that Borussia Dortmund sold their players to different clubs in Europe. These 10 players moved to nine different clubs with Bayern Munich being the only side which bought two of these stars (Mats Hummels and Mario Götze).
Conclusion
Of course, Borussia Dortmund also sold other big names in recent years for quite some money like Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Abdou Diallo, Paco Alcácer and Andriy Yarmolenko, but all of them did not bring in huge fees relative to the fee paid by BVB. We have only looked at player’s who were sold for at least double the fee paid by Dortmund to acquire them.
By looking at these statistics and the data, we can see that Borussia Dortmund have acted quite intelligently within the last couple of seasons in the transfer market, and there is no sign that they will stop doing so.
