After 18 match weeks in the 2021/22 Bundesliga season, Leverkusen are fifth in the table, just two points behind third placed Hoffenheim. One player that has caught many people’s eyes is 18-year-old Florian Wirtz. The teenage midfielder, having made his league debut as a 16 years of age, is one of the key players in the Leverkusen set up and is attracting the attention of some of the top clubs in Europe. Originally from the FC Köln academy, the attacking midfielder moved to Leverkusen in 2020. Florian Wirtz has also represented the German National Team at the senior level.

The following visualisation shows where Florian Wirtz ranks among the attacking midfielders from Europe’s top five leagues.

Florian Wirtz is one of the best young attacking midfielders not just in the Bundesliga but in the whole of Europe. His assists per 90 of 0.49 is in the top five in Europe’s top five leagues and that is why he ranks in the 96th percentile for assists per 90 minutes. Among attacking midfielders in the Bundesliga, only Jonas Hoffmann and Emil Forsberg have better goals per 90 minutes record than Florian Wirtz. Wirtz ranks in the 96th percentile for Key Passes per 90 minutes as well. These creative numbers go on to show that Wirtz is one of the best creative players in the league. His percentile rank of within the 91st percentile for Deep Completions per 90 minutes which indicates that he passes quite frequently close to the goal. His defensive numbers aren’t as strong as many of the other players but that is also because Wirtz plays higher up the pitch.

Florian Wirtz’s contract runs upto 2026 but it will be interesting to see how long he stays at the German club. If Leverkusen are to continue rising up the table, they will expect Florian Wirtz to continue to perform well in the coming weeks of the season.
