Three teams are on the same points (45) and are separated only by Goal Difference at the top of the Bundesliga table — Bayern Munich (1st), Dortmund (2nd), and Union Berlin (3rd). Two points separate SC Freiburg at 4th and Eintracht Frankfurt at 6th. An interesting title race is ahead to look out for. One team, which has perhaps struggled this season is Bayern Munich. The defending champions made some interesting moves both in the summer and winter transfer windows and might have to continue the same strategy for the next few windows.
The below visualisation shows the percentage of minutes Bayern players have enjoyed in the Bundesliga this season. This also gives an idea of which age group of players have played the most minutes and which positions lack depth.
Ryan Gravenberch moved from Ajax to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022 but the midfielder has played less than 25% of the minutes this season, though the Bayern hierarchy have insisted he is part of their plans. Midfield is one of the areas that Bayern mightn’t have to focus on in the upcoming window as they have good depth for midfield and do not have contracts running out in this department. Joshua Kimmich has played the second most minutes for Bayern this season, with the midfielder featuring in 90% of the minutes only slightly behind defender Dayot Upamecano who has pretty much been a mainstay in the Bayern backline.
The forward area is one that the German club will have to put a lot of focus on. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting whose contract expires in the summer has done well as a backup forward and has stepped up whenever called upon. Sadio Mané who was signed in the summer from Liverpool has had his injury troubles and has played fewer minutes than Bayern would have wanted him to. Mathys Tel, the 17-year-old who is slowly being integrated into the squad, is not yet ready to be the main man week in, and week out. The usual suspects (Leroy Sané, Serge Gnabry, Thomas Müller, and Kingsley Coman) have all been rotated quite often and have not been regulars in the starting XI.
For defence, Bayern look to be set for the immediate future with João Cancelo likely to be joining permanently from City and becoming the first choice along with his opposite full-back, Alphonso Davies. Benjamin Pavard looks likely to leave in the summer but Noussair Mazraoui — the free signing from Ajax last summer — looks set to give competition to Cancelo next season. At central defence, Bayern might look to add depth with only Matthijs De Ligt and Upamecano the regulars, and Daley Blind only under contract until the end of the season.
