While the race between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund to win the Bundesliga title is heating up, with only six games to go, the race to see who wins the Golden Boot is also picking up some pace. One thing for sure is that it won’t be Robert Lewandowski for the first time since 2016/17 after the striker moved to Barcelona from Bayern Munich last summer.
The below visualisation shows the weekly goalscoring performance of the top five goal scorers (at the time of writing).
Niclas Füllkrug, with 16 goals to his name, leads the scoring charts. The 30-year-old Werder Bremen forward has had an impressive season that has also earned him a call-up to the national team for the World Cup. Given Füllkrug’s consistency throughout the season, he is most likely to win the race for the Golden Boot.
Behind Füllkrug, both Marcus Thuram and his international teammate Randal Kolo Muani are tied in second place, both with 13 goals to their names. Thuram, who will be leaving Mönchengladbach on a free in the summer, does not have a penalty goal to his name, and Muani is having his best season in terms of goalscoring after moving from Ligue 1 club Nantes in the summer.
Next in the race, comes Vincenzo Grifo of Freiburg, who also has 13 goals but almost 50% of his goals are from the penalty spot and hence is ranked behind Thuram and Muani. Freiburg are having one of their best seasons in the Bundesliga and look set to finish in the European spots and Grifo has played an important role in that.
Christopher Nkunku, who will be leaving RB Leipzig in the summer for a move to Chelsea in the Premier League, has 12 goals to his name in spite of missing a number of games due to fitness and injury issues this season. Nkunku is back from injury now and if he can get to his early season form, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he actually wins the golden boot.
