The race to stay in the Bundesliga for another season is heating up, just like the race for the title. With just 10 games to go for each team, only three points separate Vfl Bochum in 14th and TSG Hoffenheim in 18th. The below visualisation shows how the position of the teams battling it out to stay in the top flight of German football has changed during the course of the season.
Vfl Bochum who were promoted last season and finished 13th in the table — nine points above the relegation zone — are involved in the battle to stay in the division for another season this time around. Only Schalke have scored fewer goals than Bochum, and Bochum have conceded the most goals in the division. If they would like to be in the Bundesliga for another campaign, then they definitely ought to fix that defence in the coming weeks and hope it’s not too late for them.
Below Vfl Bochum are Hertha BSC. The capital club who survived relegation to the 2. Bundesliga only via the playoffs last term might be in for another such scenario this time around. Only one point below Vfl Bochum on points and only scoring three goals more than Bochum, Hertha Berlin will feel like they are in a very similar boat to the club above them and will look to sort it out before time runs out.
At 16th and 17th in the table are Stuttgart and Schalke, who are level on points. Schalke, who won promotion to the Bundesliga for this season, have the worst record in terms of goals scored in the division, with just 20 goals to their name. Stuttgart, who only narrowly avoided relegation last time, will it find difficult to survive another season if their current run of winless form continues.
Rooted at the bottom of the table are Hoffenheim. The club recently appointed Pellegrino Matarazzo, who was sacked by the club above them in the table and will hope to stay in the division for the 16th consecutive season.
