Bayern Munich are making big moves in the transfer market. Their signings so far include Sadio Mané, Matthijs de Ligt, Ryan Gravenberch and Noussair Mazraoui. One signing that has grabbed the attention of many football fans is that of Gravenberch from Ajax.
Bayern paid a decent sum of money to secure the Dutch midfielder’s signature. The 20-year-old impressed for the Dutch club ever since making his senior debut in 2018. Midfield has been kind of a problem area for Bayern in terms of depth in recent years, and Gravenberch will definitely be a useful addition to the Bavarians.
The below visualization shows where the 20-year-old Dutchman ranked among Eredivisie midfielders for some of the key metrics in the 2021/22 season.
Gravenberch was one of the most complete midfielders in the league. He predominantly played on the left side of the midfield in a 4-3-3 but, at times, played as a defensive midfielder as well for Ajax last season. Gravenberch is strong in possession and is always on the ball finding his teammates. He ranked 77th percentile for Key Passes per 90 minutes last season. He is also unafraid to take a goal attempt, as he ranked 91st percentile for shots per 90 minutes.
This is a midfielder who makes those late runs into the box and loves to be in and around the box more often than one would expect as indicated by his percentile rank for Progressive runs and Touches in the box per 90 minutes. On the defensive side, Gravenberch is good in his positioning and awareness of the game.
Bayern Munich are getting a player with big potential in Gravenberch. However, going from the Eredivisie to the Bundesliga will surely be a big step for the former Ajax man. However, the German champions did not pay the fee they paid without confidence in Gravenberch. It will be interesting to monitor how Gravenberch settles into life at Bayern.
