Brighton & Hove Albion have recently recruited some of the top talents from around the globe. Several of their signings have been hugely profitable both on and off the pitch. One of their signings includes Deniz Undav from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise in January 2022.
The forward is now on loan at VfB Stuttgart for the 2023/24 season. Undav’s time at Brighton showed much promise, and the 27-year-old could improve as he approaches his prime years.
The below visualisation shows where the German ranked for some critical metrics in 22/23 compared to the centre-forwards from the top-five leagues.
Undav was signed in January 2022 and was loaned back to Union Saint-Gilliose for the remainder of the 21/22 season. The German finished as the top scorer in that season with 25 goals. Moving to the Premier League, he naturally required some adaptation to the league and hence did not start a Premier League game for Brighton until February 2023. However, during the time he has been on the pitch for Brighton, he has shown incredible finishing ability, scoring five goals. Undav is physically dominating and drops deep to hold up and link play with the wide men in his team.
Looking at the visual above, Undav is aerially dominating as well and is not afraid to get into duels. Undav is not someone who can accelerate quickly during a counterattack. He is someone who can suit a possession-based team well.
Having had a reasonably slow start to life at Brighton, it was important for Undav to find some regular playing time to return to his form from Belgium. Having regularly found the back of the net in the Belgian leagues and finishing around the top 5 for goals during his time there, Undav would like to create an impact in the Bundesliga before he can return to England again.
