We have a new champion in the Bundesliga — Bayer Leverkusen, who have broken FC Bayern’s 11-year winning streak; Leverkusen won the league after utterly dominating throughout the campaign. At the time of writing, they are unbeaten in the league and won the title with five games to spare. Xabi Alonso’s men currently lead Bayern Munich in second place by 14 points, and that could increase come the end of 2023/24, given the two teams’ contradicting form in terms of consistency.
The below visualisation shows the points tally of the top two teams in the Bundesliga over the last 10 years.
Bayern Munich’s title win in the 2017/18 season was a display of sheer dominance, finishing with 84 points, a significant lead over Schalke who managed only 63 points. RB Leipzig’s ascent among the top teams in Europe began in 2016/17, their inaugural season in the Bundesliga. They finished a commendable 2nd place, trailing champions Bayern by 15 points, the second-highest point difference in the past 10 years. This highlights the fierce competition and the thrilling nature of the Bundesliga.
Last season, the Bundesliga showcased its potential for unpredictability, as Bayern and Dortmund finished on an equal number of points (71), with Bayern clinching the title on goal difference. This was the only season of the past 10 in which the winning team finished with fewer than 75 points, adding to the league’s suspense and unpredictability. The next closest title win was in 2018/19 when Bayern finished with 78 points, just two ahead of Dortmund.
The current difference between champions Leverkusen and second-placed Bayern Munich is 14 points, and this season could easily end up being the highest in terms of points difference.
So, for any team to win the league title, somewhere between 70 and 75 points should be sufficient.
