The EFL Championship is probably one of the most exciting and thrilling leagues in the world. This season, unsurprisingly, has been one of the most competitive ones in recent times. Burnley, after getting relegated from the Premier League, have been one of the most attractive teams in the championship under Vincent Kompany this season and look like strong favourites to win the title. But below them in the table, there is real competition among teams in the fight for promotion. The below visualization shows how the race of promotion has been week-on-week till Match week 27 (at the time of writing).
Sheffield United under Paul Heckingbottom have been another one of the most eye-catching teams in the league. The Blades have the best defence in the league, conceding the fewest goals among all. After a blip in form in October that saw them go winless in six games and drop to fifth in the table, the Blades seem to have recovered and look like favourites to win automatic promotion behind Burnley.
Watford also seem to be gaining momentum in the race for the playoffs. However, they would love a little more consistency if they are to stronghold their position on the table.
Middlesbrough’s rise under Michael Carrick has been phenomenal. Middlesbrough have been one of the form teams since the appointment of the former Manchester United Coach. From 24th at one point, Middlesbrough are now fourth in the table and seem to be improving under the new manager in every aspect.
Blackburn Rovers, after seeing a good start to the season, lost some momentum in between and now find themselves in fifth, however, not very far behind Watford in third. Norwich City and West Brom will be hoping that the new management will bring some momentum at the right time. Millwall and Luton will hope they have learned from their lessons from last season and will hope to push till the very end. Sunderland, on the other hand, have been impressive under manager Tony Mowbray whose experience might be the difference between them and the rest.
Only five points separate Watford in third and Swansea in 11th. So, the race for promotion is still very much an open one and could go either way. Watford, Middlesbrough, Norwich and West Brom will all look to bring their recent experiences to the table and will look to secure a playoff spot very soon but it wouldn’t be a surprise if any of the others take this to the last day.
