This EFL Championship season has been an intriguing one.

Some stats that could convince us all of the previous statement is that the league’s top scorer is Sammie Szmodics while his team, Blackburn Rovers, sit 18th. Plymouth Argyle, meanwhile, have scored the fifth-most goals in the league while they are 19th on the table. This could go on, but the most interesting of all these statistics is which player has contributed the most to his team’s tally of goals. The below visualisation shows the percentage of goals contributed by the team’s top scorer.

Szmodics with 16 goals has netted 40% for Rovers — more than any other player. Next up is Jack Clarke, who has scored 35% of Sunderland’s goals — Clarke is also the third-highest scorer in the league. And there is a reason why Plymouth are so high up the goalscoring charts — Morgan Whittaker, with his 14 goals, has been in fine form, scoring 32% of his side’s successful strikes this season.

Leicester City have scored the most goals in the league, and 16% of those have come from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall who has the same number of goals (nine) as teammate Stephy Mavididi but a higher xG tally.

Adam Armstrong, who is the only player in the Championship to have 10+ goals and 10+ assists, has scored 28% of Southampton’s goals — the fourth-highest in the league.

Southampton, in fact, have scored the second-most goals in the league, while QPR have scored the fewest with Lyndon Dykes, their highest scorer, contributing 18% of those.

Ipswich Town have had a fascinating season on their return to the Championship, thanks to their top scorer Conor Chaplin who’s continued his good form from last season to contribute 18% of Ipswich’s goals.

Jay Stansfield joined Birmingham City with a lot of hype surrounding him and has been a key figure, contributing 22% of Birmingham City’s goals with seven to his name.

André Vidigal, meanwhile, who scored four in his first five league appearances for Stoke City, has since scored just once in the following 14 games; yet, he remains Stoke’s top scorer, netting 19% of the team’s goals.

Anthony Musaba, Jordan Hugill, and Ike Ugbo are all doing their part fairly well but will still be looked to for a greater contribution by their teams — Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham United and Cardiff City, respectively.
