Adam Armstrong signed for Southampton in the summer of 2021 after an excellent couple of seasons with Blackburn. Signing for Blackburn in January 2018, Armstrong took little time to adapt and was almost an instant star, scoring nine goals and helping his team secure promotion. He had a disappointing second season but picked up form later and finished as the Championship’s 2nd highest scorer with 28 goals in his final season at Blackburn.

Playing in the Premier League then, Southampton were desperate to secure his services and won the battle to sign him in the summer of 2021. However, after a disappointing start to his Southampton career, Armstrong is finally showing his capabilities again in the Championship.

The below visualisation shows where the 26-year-old Adam Armstrong ranks for some key metrics compared with other centre-forwards from the Championship and other leagues at the same level as the Championship.

Adam Armstrong is the Championship’s second-highest scorer this season with nine goals, second only to Sammie Szmodics’ 10 goals so far. Armstrong, throughout his career, has proven to be an all-round centre-forward. He is a high-volume shooter and can also take the responsibility of creating chances for his teammates.

It took time for him to adapt at Southampton and get used to the possession-based style that Southampton has always shown. Currently in his third season for the Saints, the relegation has helped Armstrong rediscover his form and become a regular once again in the playing 11. He needs to improve his defensive abilities and take up more responsibility defensively, but his offensive numbers are above average.

Southampton are one of the favourites to get promoted back to the Premier League next season. Armstrong will be looking to prove he has learned his lessons and can shine in the Premier League, with Southampton or otherwise.
