Aaron Connolly, the former Brighton forward, is one of those who has yet to live up to the hype. When the Republic of Ireland international made his senior debut as a 17-year-old in 2017, he was expected to become the next big thing at Brighton, but a lot has changed for Brighton and Connolly.

The forward, this summer, finally made a permanent switch away from the Seagulls — moving to Hull City after impressing during his loan spell in the second half of last season.

The below visualisation shows where Aaron Connolly ranks for some of the key metrics compared to the other players in a similar position to his.

Connolly has four goals and is Hull City’s leading scorer this season, tied with Ozan Tufan. The 23-year-old is capable of playing as an out-and-out centre-forward or as a no.10 as well. Having played most of his minutes as a centre-forward, Connolly is good at finding pockets inside the space to create shooting opportunities for himself. With 3.45 shots per 90 minutes, among centre-forwards who have played at least 100 minutes this season, only two other players have attempted more shots than the Republic of Ireland international.

Connolly’s dribbling is average, and he is not someone who likes to dribble past opponents with the ball at his feet. Attempting only 1.88 dribbles per 90 minutes, Connolly can improve that number. Defensively as well, Connolly is not incredibly imposing on his opponents, and his work-rate out of possession can be improved.

After multiple loan spells and insufficient game time at Brighton and during his loan spells, Connolly has finally secured his permanent switch away from Brighton. He looks set to be an integral part of this Hull City setup. If he can catch on to this opportunity and improve his decent performances so far, it will do a world of good to him.
