The youngest player to feature in EFL League One this term is Jack Shorrock of Port Vale (16 years old), while the oldest player is Curtis Davies of Cheltenham (38 years old). Between these two, a number of teenagers and over-thirties have made their mark this term.

The below visualisation depicts how the mean age has changed across the teams when compared with last season. Only players with more than 650 minutes have been considered to calculate the average age.

Lincoln City had the youngest squad last season, with the mean age of the team standing at 24 years. Barnsley were second, along with Fleetwood Town and Peterborough United. Relegated from League One, Forest Green Rovers’ average age stood at 25 last season.

Wycombe Wanderers quite often fielded the oldest squad in the league — their average age stood at 28, along with Derby County. Derby, in fact, have not experienced a huge change in terms of mean age when compared with this season. Cheltenham are another team that has not seen a huge difference in terms of the mean age of their regularly fielded team.

Coming to the 2023/24 season, Peterborough are rocking in League One, fielding a very young squad, their mean age at 23. They are followed by Lincoln City, relegated from Championship Wigan Athletic and Reading at 24 years.

Cambridge United have fielded the joint-oldest side on average, with their mean age at 28 years. Northampton Town, meanwhile, have fielded the youngest squad among the promoted teams — their mean age this season standing at 25.

Charlton Athletic, Portsmouth, Exeter, Oxford United, Port Vale and Wycombe Wanderers have all seen their mean age decrease this season, whereas Bolton Wanderers, Bristol Rovers and Burton Albion have all seen their mean age increase.
