The 2023/24 League One season is coming to a close, with only one game left to be played before the playoffs at the time of writing. Carlisle United are going down after seemingly finishing at the foot of the table.

Meanwhile, Stevenage, Leyton Orient and Northampton Town, the other three promoted teams, will all be playing in the third tier of English football again next season.

Historically, where have the teams that were promoted from League Two finished in League One the following season? The below visualisation shows the position and points tally of the promoted teams over the last 10 seasons.

In the last 10 seasons, from 2014/15 to the current season, only two teams have achieved the remarkable feat of winning back-to-back promotions from League Two to League One to the Championship. Luton Town, who finished second in League Two in 2017/18, won promotion to the Championship by finishing first in League One, and since then, the club has been on a steady rise. Burton Albion are the only other side to have accomplished this, finishing first in League Two in 2014/15 and following it up with a second-place finish in League One the next year.

Five teams have been relegated and returned to League Two immediately after getting promoted — Tranmere Rovers in 2019/20, Northampton Town in 2020/21, Swindon Town in 2020/21, Forest Green Rovers in 2022/23, and Carlisle United this season.

Bury, despite their promotion, faced a harsh reality. They finished 24th after a hefty points deduction and were ultimately expelled from the EFL in 2019/20. This serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that promoted teams can face.

Shrewsbury Town in 2015/16, Morecambe in 2021/22 and MK Dons in 2019/20 have all survived, finishing just above the relegation zone immediately after getting promoted. Chesterfield, in 2014/15, finished sixth and lost out on promotion.

Teams that are promoted from League Two tend to finish mid-table in League One the following season.
