North Macedonia are making their debut at a major tournament at EURO 2020, and while they gave a good account of themselves in the opening match, Austria ultimately had too much quality and came away with a 3-1 win in Bucharest. Austria took the lead through the wing-back Stefan Lainer, who expertly volleyed Marcel Sabitzer’s perfect cross into the net, but were soon pegged back after a mistake from goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann allowed the North Macedonia captain and veteran Goran Pandev to score into an empty net. The two sides went in level at half-time, but a couple of tactical changes by Austria manager Franco Foda brought his team into the game a lot more in the second half, and with goals from Michael Gregoritsch and Marko Arnautovic, Austria picked up their first-ever win at a European Championships to get their EURO 2020 campaign off to a brilliant start.
