Yesterday had the final matchday in Group B at EURO 2020, with Russia facing Denmark in Copenhagen, while Belgium took on Finland in St. Petersburg. While Belgium had already qualified for the knockout rounds, the other three sides could all still qualify, which added a lot of intrigue and excitement as both matches took place simultaneously. Finland needed a win to guarantee progression to the knockout rounds, while a draw could also be enough depending on the result of the Russia-Denmark game. Given that they were almost guaranteed top spot in the group, they were a little less intense than usual, having made eight changes from their previous match. Both Finland and Belgium played the game quite slowly as a draw suited both of them, but there was a lot more drama in the second half, when Romelu Lukaku scored from a brilliant Kevin De Bruyne pass which was unfortunately ruled out by VAR. However, Belgium did take the lead soon after, as Thomas Vermaelen’s header from a corner hit the bar and rebounded into the net off the Finnish goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky, who has been one of the best goalkeepers at EURO 2020 so far. Lukaku got his customary goal in the 81st minute, moving level with Cristiano Ronaldo, Georginio Wijnaldum and Patrik Schick at the top of the Golden Boot charts, and this result means that Finland will now have to wait and watch for the other results across the remaining groups to see if they can sneak through as one of the four best third-placed sides.
