The second round of group stage matches at EURO 2020 began with Finland taking on Russia in Saint Petersburg in Group B. Finland had won their previous match 1-0 against Denmark, with Christian Eriksen’s collapse overshadowing the game and the result, while Russia had fallen to an insipid 3-0 defeat against Belgium. Thus, the Finns could have put one foot in the round of 16 here by avoiding defeat, but Aleksei Miranchuk’s goal in added time in the first half meant that Russia took the spoils in front of a partisan home crowd, leaving Group B tightly poised with Belgium yet to play Denmark. Finland did think that they had opened the scoring through Johan Pohjanpalo, but he was adjudged to have been offside before heading in Jukka Raitala’s cross. This result keeps both sides in contention for qualification to the EURO 2020 round of 16, especially with the four best third-placed sides going through.
