Group D at EURO 2020 gave us our first heavyweight clash of the tournament in the first round of fixtures itself, as Germany faced France in Munich, in a match between the last two winners of the World Cup. Germany came into the match with quite a lot of uncertainty around the side, and expectations are slightly lower as a result, especially as a result of being drawn in such a tough group. France, on the other hand, are the favourites for the tournament, and have staggering depth across all positions – they even recalled Karim Benzema to the side after years to further strengthen their attack. This was a high-quality match between two good sides, and France broke the deadlock through a Mats Hummels own goal in the first half that was created by Paul Pogba’s superb pass out wide to Lucas Hernandez, whose cross was turned in by the unfortunate Borussia Dortmund defender with Kylian Mbappe lurking behind him for a tap-in. Mbappe had the ball in the German net in the second half with a brilliant goal which was ruled out for offside, and he was caught offside later again when he went through on goal and squared for Benzema to tap into the net. Germany improved in the second half, but could not find a way through the French defence, and this win gives France the perfect start to their EURO 2020 campaign.
