The second matchday in Group D saw France travel to Budapest to take on Hungary at a packed Puskás Aréna – the only venue at EURO 2020 so far that has been filled to near capacity, thus giving Hungary the support of nearly 67,000 fans. Hungary put on an excellent display, frustrating France in the first half even after their captain Adam Szalai had to be substituted after a blow to the head, and they managed to limit France’s threat to only what Kylian Mbappe could manage to do on his own. Hungary then managed to take a shock lead through Attila Fiola in first half stoppage time, who capitalized on weak defending by Raphael Varane and Benjamin Pavard to sneak a shot into the near post, with Hugo Lloris also expected to do better. Didier Deschamps brought on Ousmane Dembele to stretch Hungary more near the hour mark, but it was Mbappe again who made the difference, running onto Lloris’ long pass and squaring the ball into the box which Willi Orban could only get a toe to, thus setting up Antoine Griezmann to finish into the unguarded net. Dembele had struck a post earlier, and his pace caused a lot of trouble to the Hungarian defence before he himself had to be substituted with an injury. France sent on the likes of Olivier Giroud, Thomas Lemar and Corentin Tolisso to try and break the deadlock, but Hungary held firm to gain their first point of EURO 2020, and with it some hope of going through as well, provided they beat Germany in their last group match.
