After a disappointing 0-0 draw with Sweden in the first matchday in Group E, Spain were looking to make amends and pick up their first win at EURO 2020 on the second matchday, against Poland. Luis Enrique made one change to the team, bringing in Gerard Moreno for Ferran Torres, with Alvaro Morata retaining his place in the XI despite some criticism of his performance. Spain kept the majority of possession, as expected, although Poland did start quickly, with a strong penalty shout in the first couple of minutes. Morata repaid his manager’s faith in the 24th minute when he scored from Moreno’s mis-hit cross to give Spain the lead, even though the goal was initially ruled out for offside, with VAR intervening to reinstate the strike. Poland did create chances whenever they managed to counter-attack, and they levelled the score 10 minutes into the second half through captain Robert Lewandowski, who outjumped Aymeric Laporte to guide a header into the bottom corner. Spain received a big opportunity to take the lead just a couple of minutes later with a penalty for Jakub Moder’s challenge on Moreno – however, Moreno’s penalty hit the post, and Morata missed the rebound with an open goal in front of him. Morata himself would also hit the post later, and this was again a tale of missed chances for Spain, who now have two draws from both their matches, while Poland, with one point, also have a chance of making it to the knockout stages of EURO 2020.
