The final matchday in Group A at EURO 2020 kicked off on Sunday night, with Italy playing Wales in Rome and Switzerland taking on Turkey in Baku at the same time. Switzerland were still in with a shout of making it into the knockout stages, either as one of the four best third-placed teams or even in second place if Wales suffered a heavy defeat to Italy, while Turkey needed to beat Switzerland and then hope results in other groups went their way to have any chance of qualifying as one of the third-placed teams. Haris Seferovic opened the scoring for Switzerland in the 6th minute, and Xherdan Shaqiri continued his love affair with the Euros by scoring another fantastic goal to put Switzerland two goals up inside half an hour. With the news that Italy were leading against Wales in the other group game, this gave Switzerland hope of sneaking into second place if they managed to score a few more goals, but those hopes were dashed a little through Irfan Kahveci, who scored with a wonderful strike of his own to make the score 2-1. That was Turkey’s first goal of EURO 2020 in what has been an extremely disappointing display from a team many thought would go far, but Shaqiri scored again just a few minutes again to restore Switzerland’s two-goal cushion. There would be no more goals in this match, with Switzerland thus finishing in third place and now awaiting results in the other groups to see if they have qualified as one of the four best third-placed teams.
