The second matchday in Group A of EURO 2020 saw Turkey face Wales in Baku, in what was akin to a home game for the Turks. Despite the support of the Azerbaijan crowd, they were unable to pick up any points for the second match in a row, with Wales winning 2-0 and practically sealing a place for themselves in the round of 16. Wales had the better chances in this match, with Aaron Ramsey in particular failing to make the most of two superb opportunities before he finally opened the scoring just before half-time – running onto a superb pass from Gareth Bale, who was also in inspired form. Bale created five chances in this match – which is more than any team had managed until that point at EURO 2020, but he also missed the opportunity to make the game safe for Wales, blazing over a penalty which he had earned himself. Nevertheless, Connor Roberts put the icing on the cake deep into stoppage time, finishing smartly from Bale’s layoff in the box to make this a memorable night for Welsh football fans. Turkey, on the other hand, are now on the brink of elimination, which will be a huge disappointment to their fanatical supporters, as well as to many fans across the world who had tipped them as a dark horse for the tournament.
