The last matchday of the group stages at EURO 2020 continued on Monday, with Group C in action, as Ukraine faced Austria and the Netherlands took on North Macedonia. Ukraine and Austria were both tied on three points, and so both teams had a chance to make it to the round of 16 outright as the second-placed side in the group, with potentially both going through as well if one managed to be among the four best third-placed group sides. Austria dominated proceedings, taking as many as 18 shots, even though just four were on target, while Ukraine did have a couple of opportunities, Austria’s goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann was not really extended. Austria took the lead through Christoph Baumgartner’s goal from David Alaba’s corner in the first half, and could have had a couple more if the returning Marko Arnautovic had managed to finish better. This win put Franco Foda’s side in the round of 16, where they will face Wales in Amsterdam on Saturday, while Ukraine are now extremely unlikely to make it, having finished on three points only, with a number of third-placed sides poised to finish on four points or more.
