Some amazing talents have come out of the illustrious Chelsea academy over the years – players who have become established players at the top-level leagues across the globe.
Ian Maatsen is one of those, although the 21-year-old is a Netherlands youth international and originally from the Feyenoord academy.
Early in his youth career, he moved from Feyenoord to Sparta Rotterdam and then to PSV before moving to Chelsea in 2018.
Since then, Maatsen has been on the move to different clubs in the English Football League.
In the summer of 2022, Maatsen was signed on loan by Kompany’s Burnley and it is fair to say the left-back couldn’t have had a better season.
There is a very good chance he is going to be a key part of the Netherlands’ set-up in the U21 Euros this summer and the below visualisation shows where Maatsen ranked for some of the key metrics when compared with the other left-backs in the Championship 22/23.
Maatsen was an integral part of Burnley’s setup this season with the 21-year-old almost an ever-present at left-back, playing the fifth-most minutes for Burnley in 2022/23.
Ian Maatsen is an attacking young fullback who isn’t afraid to take on the opposition.
With six assists to his name in the recently concluded season, Maatsen was only behind Josh Brownhill for assists for Burnley.
Maatsen is also an important part of the way that Burnley play.
One of the weaknesses of his game is his aerial ability.
Maatsen has all the capabilities of a typical full-back that wants to play in the Premier League.
Now he has his chance, though whether that will be at Burnley or Chelsea remains unclear.
In any event, first, he has got some international responsibility on his shoulders and he will definitely be one of the key players for the Netherlands U21 this summer if the Dutch want to go two steps further than 2021 this time.
