This summer window has seen La Liga clubs spend big on transfers, including Julián Álvarez to Atlético Madrid and Dani Olmo to Barcelona.
A trend that is increasingly prevalent across all European clubs — especially the top five leagues — has seen clubs spend big on players aged 23 or under.
Now, how is this affecting the squads all around?
Looking at La Liga alone, which teams are younger and which teams are older?
One way to find that out is by looking at the squad’s mean age going into the new season.
La Liga Squads By Average Age – 2024/25 Season
The visualisation below shows the average age of each squad; the longer the bar, the older the squad.
Which La Liga Team Has The Youngest Squad in 2024/25?
Valencia have the youngest squad in the league, with a mean age of just 23 years.
They did have one of the youngest squads in Europe last season as well, with six out of their 10 most-used players aged 23 or under.
Barcelona have the second youngest squad, with a mean squad age of 24 years.
With a lot of financial trouble, this comes as no surprise; the last couple of years have seen Barcelona give opportunities to a number of players coming through their famous La Masía academy—Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí among them, with both playing more than 1500 minutes last term.
Marc Bernal and Marc Casado are ones to watch out for this season.
Real Sociedad are just behind at third for mean squad age at 25 years.
Champions Real Madrid’s mean squad age stands at 27 — putting them closer to the opposite end along with Villarreal, Real Betis, Rayo Vallecano, Mallorca, and Atlético Madrid, who all have a mean squad age higher than the champions.
Which La Liga Team Has The Oldest Squad In 2024/25?
Specifically, Atlético Madrid are the oldest squad, with a mean squad age of 29.
Will be interesting to see if the 6 year age gap between Atlético and Valencia has an impact on performance this season.
