After a difficult last season at Arsenal, Alexandre Lacazette returned to Lyon in the summer of 2022. Lacazette really struggled for game time under Mikel Arteta in 2021/22 but has started every league game for Lyon this season.
Not just that, the Frenchman has managed to find the back of the net nine times this season in the league, putting him at joint third for top scorers in Ligue 1 this season. He finished as the top scorer at Arsenal in two of his five seasons in North London. Lacazette was also quite frequently at the top end of the goalscoring charts during his time at Lyon. So it was not quite surprising to a lot when the forward decided to return to the Ligue 1 club. The below visual shows where Lacazette ranks for some of the key attacking metrics this season.
Alexandre Lacazette has always been known as a very good player in front of the goal since his early days at Lyon. However, after a difficult time at Arsenal last season, Lacazette managed to bounce back and is regularly finding the back of the net again.
One could also argue Lacazette was a bit unlucky last season as he underperformed his xG while this season, he is more or less on par with the xG, finishing his chances well. An aspect of the game that Lacazette might have to probably improve is his dribbling ability as he ranks below par when compared with players who play in similar positions to his for that metric. Lacazette has mostly been used closer to the box as a typical no.9 but the Frenchman is also very well capable of holding and linking up play with his teammates.
Alexandre Lacazette seemed to have lost track a bit but returning to Lyon once again should give him a lot of confidence. It will be interesting to see if he can maintain this form in the second half of the season to help Lyon secure a place in the Champions League.
