We are approaching the business end of the Premier League 2022/23 season and for the first time in six years, a club that is not named Manchester City or Liverpool could still realistically win the Premier League title. With seven games to go, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are top of the table, four points ahead of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
However, the Cityzens have a game in hand (at the time of writing). Outside of the top two, the battle for the European spots is also heating up and the battle to stay in the division is one of the closest we have seen in recent years with only six points separating 16th-placed Leeds United and bottom club Southampton.
The below visualisation shows the form of different teams and how that form has changed over the course of the season.
Manchester City seem to be on the type of run that they usually have during this period of the campaign. City have won their last six games and seem to be gaining the much-needed momentum that might help them leapfrog Arsenal in the table who seem to have a blip in their form with back-to-back draws after seven straight wins.
Manchester United, after a run of form that saw them fail to score a goal in three games, have won three games on the trot now. Newcastle United, after 4 straight wins suffered only their third loss all season recently. Tottenham are experiencing a level of inconsistency that they have shown all season.
Aston Villa, under Unai Emery, are probably one of the biggest surprises from the second half of the season and have been the second-best team next to City on form, with Villa unbeaten in their last eight games. Brighton have played only 29 games so far but are still ahead of Liverpool who have won only one game out of their last five.
Midtable Fulham, Brentford and Chelsea have all struggled for form recently and look set to battle it out to finish in the top half of the table. Crystal Palace seemed to have gained some much-needed momentum after re-appointing Roy Hodgson as the manager with three wins on the trot.
Wolves and Bournemouth seem to be drifting towards safety with both teams securing back-to-back wins. From West Ham at 15th to Southampton at 20th, the battle for relegation is tight and all teams in these places seem to be struggling off late to get points on board on a consistent basis.
