The 2023/24 Premier League season has seen players from different teams suffer from injury setbacks over the course of the season. The number of players getting injured seems to have gone higher in hindsight, but only data will tell if that is true — and that analysis is for another time.

However, because of all these injuries, teams have been forced to change their combinations and fully utilise their depth. The visualisation below shows the number of players used by all 20 teams throughout 2023/24.

Sheffield United, who sit rock bottom of the Premier League, have used the most players (34) at the time of writing. With a change of manager in between, the Blades have struggled for consistency in performances this season, which has led them to chop and change players quite frequently. Newcastle United, who have had several injury setbacks to their players, rank second after using 33 players so far this season. Burnley, another team that is most likely to go down along with the Blades, have used the league’s third-most number of players (32).

Manchester City have used the fewest players in the league (23), which explains why they are so good consistently. Their legendary manager has primarily stuck to a set group of players and seen a few injuries in his team to avoid having to change quite often. Everton, West Ham United and Wolves are just behind Manchester City regarding the number of players, with the former using 24 and the latter two teams using 25 in the league so far.

Arsenal (26), Fulham (26), and Luton Town (26) have also frequently used the same combinations.

Meanwhile, Chelsea, which has one of the biggest squads in the league, has used 30 players—the same as Liverpool and Manchester United.
