Inconsistency has been the theme of Spurs’ 2022-23 season, not just in terms of results but also in terms of team selection. Right wing-back has been a problem position for Antonio Conte during his time at Spurs with the manager trying at least three players in that position.
Emerson Royal was signed from Barcelona in the summer of 2021 and has played the most minutes under Conte in that position. Djed Spence, who was linked with multiple clubs in the summer of 2022 and whose signing was considered a scoop after Spurs signed him seems to be out of favour under current manager Conte and has not started a single game under Conte so far. Matt Doherty is another who has been used in that position with a few other players as well filling in whenever required. Hence, Spurs are on the lookout for a right wing-back and are linked with Pedro Porro from Sporting.
The below radar shows where the 23-year-old ranks for some of the key offensive and defensive metrics when compared with the other right wing-backs from the Primeira Liga 22/23.
Pedro Porro, already a senior Spanish international, can play as a right-back or right wing-back. Porro ranks 81st percentile for Expected Goal Contributions per 90, has 6 assists to his name and that is more than any other Sporting CP player. Another notable aspect of his game is his dribbling with the wing-back ranking 88th percentile for Dribbles per 90 minutes. Sporting’s attractive style of football has allowed Porro to up his offensive game but has also helped him find the balance between his offensive and defensive game. Defensively, Porro still has to improve on a lot of aspects including his positioning and aerial ability if he is to excel in the Premier League. On the ball, Porro is confident and is not afraid to take risks, looking forward for every pass — ranking above average for both Progressive passes per 90 and Dangerous passes per 90.
Pedro Porro has been on Spurs’ transfer list for quite some time now but the delay in getting him in might actually cost Spurs a place in the top four and Antonio Conte his job. Irrespective of what happens with Conte or with Spurs this season, Porro looks set to become Spurs’ next signing and it will be interesting to see if Porro will be able to solve Spurs’ problems in the right wing-back area.
