One of the most complete midfielders in Europe over the last few seasons has been Lazio’s Sergej Milinković-Savić. The 27-year-old seems to be attracting interest from a number of top European clubs every summer only to stay with Lazio and perform at his best every season. In 2022/23, Milinković-Savić has once again been one of Lazio’s best performers.

The below visualization shows where Sergej Milinković-Savić ranks for some of the key metrics when compared with his counterparts in the 2022/23 Serie A season so far.

Sergej Milinković-Savić has been an important part of Lazio’s midfield since signing from Genk eight years ago. This season, only two other outfield players have played more minutes for Lazio than Sergej Milinković-Savić. With eight assists to his name, only Napoli’s Kvaratskhelia has more than the Serbian midfielder. Usually playing on the right side of a midfield three, Milinković-Savić is the chief creator at Lazio and is regularly involved in the first phase of building an attack.

As seen in the visual above, Milinković-Savić is not hesitant to come forward to receive a pass. His confidence on the ball allows him to comfortably carry past opponent players and create chances for his teammates — a high goal contribution per 90 — ranking 91st percentile and 97th percentile for Dangerous passes per 90 minutes.

Defensively as well, Milinković-Savić is tireless and is always aware of what is happening around him, putting him 76th percentile for Positioning. His height allows him to be a target for a number of aerial balls and he quite often wins those aerial duels — 81st percentile for Aerial Duels Won. His role at his club requires him to play as a box-to-box midfielder and he does not shy away from the thick of the action at both ends of the pitch. This role also quite often puts closer to the opposition penalty area — 76th percentile for Touches in Opp. Penalty area — which is impressive.

No one knows when Milinković-Savić might leave Lazio but as long as he is at the Italian club, he will definitely play a vital part in their plans to consistently push for the Champions League spots but first they will be looking to finish in those spots this season and Sergej Milinković-Savić will be required to continue his excellent performances.
