Napoli are running away with the Serie A title and are set to qualify for the UEFA Champions league comfortably but below them in the table, it looks like the race to qualify for Europe is heating up. After 26 match weeks into the 22/23 season, six teams are fighting for five European spots across three different European competitions. The below visualisation shows how the teams involved in the race of Europe have changed positions in the table so far.
Inter are currently second in the table. Having qualified for this season’s quarterfinals of Europe’s top-tier competition, Simeone Inzaghi’s men sit a point above Lazio. After struggling for some consistency early on in the season, Inter picked up some form of momentum after the World Cup break that has helped come this far ahead in the table. Inter will look to continue this form if they are to finish in the UCL spots.
After failing to qualify for this season’s UCL, Lazio look like one of the favourites to qualify for the UCL other than Napoli. Sarri’s men are one of the form teams in Serie A now. Lazio will be relying on their defensive record — second-best in the league — if they want to continue this form and play in next season’s Champions League.
One point behind Lazio are AC Milan and two points behind Lazio are AS Roma. The defending champions Milan have had a poor run of form since the turn of the year. Winless for five games, Milan dropped to sixth in the table but seem to have got some stability now and are back in fourth, though nothing is guaranteed yet for the defending champions.
Mourinho’s Roma, meanwhile, after winning the Conference League last year and qualifying for the Europa (still alive in this year’s Europa competition) will look to sort out their qualification for UCL via the league but it is not going to be easy for the capital club given how close the teams are in terms of points in the league table.
Atalanta, meanwhile, have had a mixed season so far. On paper, they look to be one of the least favourites to qualify for Europe with Gasperini’s men having the form that is needed to take over the line but do they have the experience that can beat Mourinho’s Roma and Allegri’s Juventus?
Juventus had one of the worst starts to the season and after that, they had 15 points deducted for off-field reasons. In spite of that, Allegri’s men are well and truly in contention to qualify for the Champions League — thanks to their eight-game winning split before and after the World Cup. From being in 20th in the table at one point, Juventus have risen to 7th currently and that is by no means an ordinary feat.
