Marcus Thuram was this summer when the French international decided to leave Borussia Mönchengladbach for free in the summer window. The versatile 26-year-old forward decided to join Inter after receiving offers from several high-profile clubs around Europe. Since joining I Nerazzurri, Thuram has settled in well, starting all league games.
The below visualisation shows where Thuram ranks for some key metrics compared to the other centre-forwards in Europe’s tier-1 leagues this season.
With two goals and two assists in four league games so far, Thuram has formed an excellent partnership with Lautaro Martínez upfront for Inter.
With 3.4 shots per 90 minutes, Marcus Thuram ranks in the top 15% for shots attempted among centre-forwards in Europe’s big leagues.
His biggest threat is to hold up and link up with his teammates. Thuram can also play as a no.10 if needed and has often played that role in the past for France or at his previous club, Borussia Mönchengladbach.
With an xG per 90 of 0.66, Thuram can score almost every other game and is among the best for this metric in Serie A. His finishing is also quite decent, and he has not been an overperformer or underperformer of xG throughout his career.
Defensively, Thuram’s numbers for the season look average so far, and that is expected to improve over the course. Usually a hard worker off the ball, Thuram likes to put in a shift defensively and likes to press from the front, but most of the defensive burden up front for Inter lies on the shoulders of Lautaro Martínez.
Marcus Thuram’s move in the summer was highly anticipated, and in fact, it might have surprised a few that he decided to join Inter in the end. So far, the move seems sensible and positive for all parties involved, and it will be interesting to see how Thuram’s numbers pan out at the end of the season.
