2022 has been a notable year for football fans around the world. The year has seen some top talent materialise and make it to the grand stage, while other top talents are preparing and waiting for their chance to do the same. In this article, we will see one such player to watch out for from Serie A in 2023. The player has been shortlisted based on the number of minutes he has played, his role and importance at club level and, of course, his potential.
Tottenham Hotspur signed Iyenoma Udogie from Udinese in the summer of 2023 and sent the wing-back on loan to Udinese for the season. The Italian youth international has impressed during the campaign and there is every chance that the 20-year-old becomes Spurs’ first-choice wing-back next season.
The below visualization shows where the wingback ranks for some of the key metrics when compared with other players who play as left wing-backs in Serie A.
Udogie’s transfer from Hellas Verona was made permanent only this year. Only three other Udinese players scored more goals than the left wing-back last season. Udogie already has two goals to his name this season. The 20-year-old can play in a back four or a back three but predominantly has played in a back three. His radar shows that he still has to improve in several areas, especially in possession. Like most wing-backs these days, Udogie is often found closer to the opposition penalty area. The biggest strengths of Udogie include his ability to confidently dribble past opposition players.
While Udogie is not yet the complete wing-back, he has shown the ability to adapt and be versatile when needed. Spurs have probably tried more players at left wing-back (Ryan Sessegnon, Ivan Perišić, Ben Davies) than they have at any other position. Sending Udogie back to Udinese on loan was probably the right choice as he is still raw and lacks in a few key areas required to be a starter in the Premier League.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if he is loaned back once again or if he is not straight away integrated into the starting XI but one thing is for sure — Iyenoma Udogie has caught the eye of the people, not only at Spurs but a lot of clubs around the world, and that is why he is a player to watch out for from the Serie A in 2023.
