What a game it was! The Champions League Final 2013 between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich was an exciting and anticipated game between the German rivals. Klopp’s pressing monster against Heynckes offensive machine was a recipe for a thriller. Both teams defeated one of the Spanish giants, Real Madrid and Barcelona, in the semi-finals.

Bayern was looking to make up for their undeserved loss against Chelsea from 2012 in their “Finale Dahoam” and Dortmund was trying to underline that they are Germany’s number one.

Looking back at the game from an xG perspective, we can clearly see that Bayern deserved to win this game since they created better chances. At the final whistle, we had a total xG of 1.57 for Dortmund, which includes their 0.76 xG penalty, and a total xG of 3.3 for Bayern Munich. Other than their penalty, Dortmund only created one chance with an xG value higher than 0.1. On the other hand, Bayern Munich created 9 chances with an xG value of higher than 0.1. As shown in the shot map above, Bayern created great opportunities centrally in front of the goal in and around the goalie box.

Mario Mandžukić opened the scoring in the 60th minute with an easy tap-in (xG value: 0.75) after a square ball from Robben. Only eight minutes later İlkay Gündoğan equalized from the penalty spot after Dante fouled Marco Reus. Just when you thought the game was going into overtime, Arjen Robben sealed the deal with a composed finish (xG value: 0.39) to give Bayern Munich the long-awaited UEFA Champions League title.
