Wolves are in the middle of a massive transition on the pitch. With manager Bruno Lage sacked last season and Julien Lopetegui appointed, several of their long-term players are also on the move.
This transition started last summer but is in full swing this year. As part of that transition, Hugo Bueno was promoted from the Wolves academy side and since then has been a regular for them in the squad.
The below visualisation shows where the 2002-born defender ranked for some key metrics compared to the other players in his position last season.
Hugo Bueno played the most minutes for Wolves at left-back last season. Looking at the visual above, it is clear Bueno isn’t afraid to dribble past opponents, ranking a high 87th percentile for Dribbles per 90 minutes.
With only one assist to his name so far and reasonably below-average Expected Goal Contributions numbers, Bueno still has yet to show his attacking potential fully. This could also be because of how Wolves played last season, staying deep and hitting on the counter.
Throughout the season, Bueno’s positional discipline when his team has the ball has improved, but there is still a long way to go for him to be considered a first-choice left-back consistently. Bueno plays mostly on instinct, which has made him what he is today, but his decision-making on and off the ball has been a topic of discussion for people who have watched him.
Hugo Bueno was a surprise emergence to the Premier League last season, but he showed glimpses of what he could do whenever he did get the chance to prove his capabilities — with a rebuild in the background and Wolves losing some key players from the previous season. 20-year-old Hugo Bueno is expected to be involved regularly once again — whether that will be as a starter or from the bench, only time will tell.
