Following an entertaining 3-2 win over Ukraine on the first matchday in Group C at EURO 2020, the Netherlands faced Austria, who had also scored thrice in a 3-1 win over North Macedonia in their opening match. The Netherlands seemed to have much better control of this game, not letting Austria progress with the ball easily and attacking quickly and directly on multiple occasions. They opened the scoring early on through a Memphis Depay penalty after right wing-back Denzel Dumfries was fouled in the box by the Austria captain, David Alaba, and even though Austria would end up having more possession by the end of the game, the Netherlands were rarely threatened, with just one shot on target. Dumfries scored his second goal in as many games midway through the second half to assure the Netherlands of a win, and they also confirmed their qualification to the round of 16 as a result. Austria remain on three points, and their meeting with Ukraine will now be vital for both teams’ hopes of qualifying.
